Offence Summary

Michael Silcock raped and sexually assaulted a woman while she was intoxicated and incapacitated in the early hours of the morning. He was convicted after a trial and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Full Description

Michael Silcock, a 56-year-old man from Halifax, was sentenced to 11 years in prison at Bradford Crown Court for raping and sexually assaulting a woman. The court heard that Silcock attacked his victim in the early hours of the morning when she was heavily intoxicated, drifting in and out of consciousness, and physically incapable of reacting. He was described as having 'preyed on her helplessness' during the assault.

The victim, in a statement read to the court by prosecutor Michael Morley, detailed the profound impact of the attack, stating she had been left feeling scared, anxious, and paranoid, with sporadic flashbacks that left her unable to breathe. She described suffering severe emotional damage, to the extent that she had lost interest in life.

Silcock was convicted by a jury following a trial. The court was informed of his extensive criminal history, comprising 40 previous convictions for 91 offences—including wounding, assault, and dishonesty—dating back to 1983. In mitigation, defence barrister Abigail Langford noted a significant gap in Silcock's offending since 2013, with no prior sexual offences, and highlighted his struggles with alcoholism, addiction, and a tracheotomy undergone as part of cancer treatment.

Sentencing Silcock, His Honour Judge Ahmed Nadim praised the victim's tenacity and courage, stating: 'The emotional damage you have inflicted is severe and long lasted. It would not be an exaggeration to say that she has lost interest in life.' The judge described the assault as a 'violation' and expressed the court's profound gratitude to the victim for her evidence that brought Silcock to justice. Silcock must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release on licence. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and subjected to a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The case was reported by The Telegraph & Argus, with details emerging from the proceedings at Bradford Crown Court. West Yorkshire Police provided an image of Silcock in connection with the case.
