Offence Summary

Soran Azizi was convicted of sex trafficking as part of a gang that exploited vulnerable teenage girls for sexual purposes. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Full Description

Soran Azizi, alongside three other men, was involved in a Tyneside-based gang that systematically sexually exploited girls as young as 13 from 2006 onwards. The gang used manipulation, drugs, and alcohol to control and abuse the victims, with the crimes exposed by Northumbria Police's Operation Wren.

The 28-year-old from Newcastle was found guilty of sex trafficking following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court. Victims provided compelling testimony, with one stating: 'they were much older and pretended to be my friend and drove me around - but they were just totally using me for sex when I was a child'. Prosecutor Anne Richardson explained that the girls were kept 'beholden and in thrall' to the perpetrators. Judge Robert Spragg commended the victims' 'extraordinary courage' during the proceedings.

The convictions were linked to a wider scandal, including the August 2017 guilty pleas of 17 men and one woman in connected child sex abuse cases. Azizi, who had illegally entered the UK as an asylum seeker and received indefinite leave to remain, may now be deported.
