A shocking early morning attack occurred on 19 March 2022, when John Sommerville Taylor Horne, aged 39, from Broadacre Place in Fareham, raped and assaulted a woman on a footbridge crossing Western Way near Fareham train station. The incident took place as the victim was walking home alone after leaving Slug and Lettuce pub in the town centre around 1am. An unknown man, later identified as Horne, approached her on West Street, made threats, and then followed her onto the footbridge where he carried out the brutal assault, including rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Hampshire Constabulary launched a thorough investigation immediately following the report. Officers reviewed CCTV footage from the night of the assault, which proved crucial in identifying the perpetrator. Detective Chief Inspector Roger Wood, who led the investigation, described the event as a 'shocking incident which will forever have an impact on this woman's life.' He praised the victim's courage, stating, 'Her courage and support throughout this investigation has ensured the conviction of a very dangerous man.' The crime also caused significant concern within the local community, with Wood adding, 'This crime also had a huge impact on the local community who were understandably concerned about what had happened. Horne was arrested and charged with rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on 25 April 2022, where he entered guilty pleas to both counts. Following his admission, Horne was remanded in custody.
