Offence Summary

Derek Lamond, a repeat sex offender, was jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of a series of sexual offences against two young girls spanning over two decades from 1995 to 2017.

Full Description

Derek Lamond, 59, from Dunfermline in Fife, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a catalogue of sexual offences committed against two young girls over more than two decades. The predatory abuse, which took place between 1995 and 2017 at various locations in Fife and inside cars, involved molestation, rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and indecent conduct. This marks Lamond's third conviction for sexual offences, highlighting his persistent danger to the public.

The court heard harrowing details of how Lamond began targeting his first victim when she was just four years old. He repeatedly molested her over the years, providing her with alcohol and cigarettes to facilitate the abuse. The offences escalated, culminating in a rape when the girl was between seven and 10 years old. His second victim was similarly groomed from the age of seven, enduring years of sexual abuse including an attempted rape, again accompanied by offers of drink and cigarettes. Despite Lamond's denials during police interviews and his claim at trial that the victims had fabricated their accounts for financial gain, a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh convicted him on all 10 charges. Nine verdicts were unanimous, with a majority decision on the final count.

Judge Lord Renucci condemned Lamond's 'appalling and predatory behaviour' during sentencing, describing him as a 'significant' risk to others. He emphasised the profound and lasting harm inflicted on the victims, stating, 'The harm you have caused to the complainers has continued to affect them well into adulthood.' The judge rejected mitigation arguments from defence advocate John Brannigan, who highlighted Lamond's care for an elderly aunt and his family priorities, ruling that there was 'no alternative' to a lengthy custodial sentence given the gravity of the crimes. In addition to the 12-year term, Lamond will be supervised for three years upon release and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Detective Constable Emma Moyes from Police Scotland praised the victims' bravery in coming forward, noting, 'Derek Lamond will now face the consequences of his appalling and predatory behaviour. We thank the victims in this case for coming forward and their determination throughout the investigation.' The conviction, reported by UKNIP, brings closure to a long ordeal for the victims, whose courage has been lauded by the court and authorities alike.
