Full Description

Awet Solomon, 24, from Bath Road in West Drayton, has been sentenced to six years and nine months' imprisonment at Inner London Crown Court for the rape of a woman in the City of London.

The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day 2023. The victim had alighted from a bus on Mansell Street and was walking towards Whitechapel High Street when Solomon, a stranger to her, dragged her into a nearby alleyway. There, he beat her, strangled her, and subjected her to a violent rape, causing actual bodily harm.

Following the attack, the victim promptly contacted the police, leading to a swift investigation. Solomon was arrested, charged, and remanded in custody within just 36 hours of the report being made. He later pleaded guilty to the charges of rape, strangulation, and actual bodily harm.

Detective Superintendent Richard Waight of the City of London Police commended the victim's courage in reporting the incident and supporting the investigation. In a statement, he said: 'I would like to thank the victim for showing tremendous courage and strength to come forward to report such an abhorrent incident and in supporting this investigation. City of London Police take allegations of rape and sexual offences extremely seriously and we investigate them with the utmost sensitivity. We will believe you, listen and support you throughout every step of the investigation and do everything we can to bring the offender to justice.' He also praised the investigative team for their diligence, noting that their work has contributed to making the City a safer place.

The case was handled by the City of London Police, who worked closely with specialist officers to support the victim throughout the process. This sentencing underscores the authorities' commitment to addressing sexual offences with urgency and thoroughness.
