Offence Summary

Adam Hall was convicted of multiple rapes and intentionally transmitting HIV to victims while aware of his condition. He engaged in unprotected sex and raped survivors across various UK locations between 2016 and 2023.

Full Description

Adam Hall, a 43-year-old man previously from the Washington area in Tyne and Wear, was found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court of committing serious sexual offences and causing grievous bodily harm through the intentional transmission of HIV. The convictions, announced on 6th March, involved five counts of rape and seven counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, spanning a period from 2016 to 2023. Hall targeted seven survivors, primarily men, and was fully aware that he carried transmittable levels of the HIV virus yet proceeded to engage in unprotected sexual activities, including raping the victims in the majority of cases.

The court heard detailed evidence of Hall's callous actions, which extended beyond the rapes to include supplying GHB, a controlled drug commonly known as a 'date rape' substance, to facilitate his assaults. Additionally, he was convicted of failing to comply with a police investigation by refusing to provide the password to his phone, which likely contained further incriminating evidence. Northumbria Police's extensive investigations revealed that Hall had travelled widely within the UK, including to County Durham, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Manchester, and London, where he may have had sexual contact with other unidentified individuals.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Smith of Northumbria Police described Hall as a 'callous and calculating sexual predator' who showed 'absolutely no remorse for the extensive suffering and distress he has caused.' She praised the bravery of the seven victim-survivors whose testimonies were instrumental in securing the convictions, noting that Hall becomes only the second person in the UK to be found guilty of intentionally transmitting HIV. Despite denying all charges throughout the trial, the jury unanimously convicted him on all counts.

Following the guilty verdict, Hall was remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for 23rd April at Newcastle Crown Court. The case underscores the devastating long-term impacts on the victims, who will face the consequences of Hall's actions for the rest of their lives. This conviction highlights the work of Northumbria Police in bringing dangerous individuals to justice and protecting public health.
