Full Description

A Bournemouth man, Stephen Paul Beale, has been imprisoned for 16 years following his conviction for a series of serious sexual offences against children that occurred decades ago in the Dorset area.

Beale, aged 61 and formerly residing on Moore Avenue in Bournemouth, was found guilty after a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court. The offences, which took place between the 1980s and 1990s, involved five young victims aged between five and 14 years old at the time. He was convicted on 11 counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, nine counts of sexual assault on a child under 16, one count of rape of a child under 13, and one count of possession of prohibited images of a child. The trial concluded on 24 May 2018, with sentencing handed down on 14 June 2018.

In addition to the 16-year custodial sentence, Beale received a one-year extension to his licence period under Section 236A of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, classifying him as an offender of particular concern. This means he will not be eligible for automatic release after serving half his term but must await approval from the Parole Board. He was also subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to register on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Detective Constable Jo Shewbridge from Dorset Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team commended the victims' bravery: 'Firstly, I want to praise the five victims in this case for having the bravery to report these offences and support the investigation and prosecution. Beale’s despicable offending has had a profound impact on them and they have all shown immense courage in attending court to give evidence.' She further noted, 'No sentence will ever compensate for what they have been through, but I hope the conclusion of this case will bring them some closure... I also hope that the outcome of this case will give other victims of sexual abuse the confidence to report offences.'

The case was investigated by Dorset Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT), which specialises in historical and non-recent child abuse cases. This sentencing reflects the ongoing commitment to pursuing justice for such crimes, no matter how much time has passed since they were committed. The article, published by Dorset View on 15 June 2018, highlights the profound impact of Beale's actions and the determination of authorities to hold perpetrators accountable.
