Full Description

Brian Marsden, a 65-year-old man from Carlisle, has been imprisoned for over four years following his conviction on serious sexual offences against young girls. The case, investigated by Cumbria Constabulary, came to light as historical abuse spanning several years in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Marsden, residing at Stonegarth in Carlisle, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court where he was sentenced on 3 November 2025. He pleaded guilty or was found guilty of three counts of gross indecency with a girl and three counts of indecent assault on a girl, alongside one count of assaulting a young person to cause unnecessary suffering. These offences occurred between 1997 and 2002, highlighting a pattern of abusive behaviour towards vulnerable children during that period.

Detective Constable Kate Cunningham, the Rape and Serious Sexual Offence (RASSO) Engagement Officer who led the investigation, described the impact of Marsden's actions: 'Marsden subjected his victims to multiple incidents of abuse, which he denied in interview.' She emphasised the long-lasting effects, noting that 'offences of this nature have a lasting impact, with the victims continuing to experience the psychological impact of the abuse they faced in adult life.' The sentencing marks a significant step in delivering justice for the survivors, who bravely came forward despite the passage of time.

The court proceedings underscore the commitment of Cumbria Constabulary to pursuing historical sexual abuse cases, demonstrating that no amount of time can shield perpetrators from accountability. Marsden's denial during police interviews contrasted sharply with the evidence presented, leading to his conviction and subsequent imprisonment.
