Full Description

A former police officer from Halstead has avoided immediate imprisonment after being convicted of possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. Glenn Briggs, aged 50, was found guilty by a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court of four counts of downloading such images, despite initially denying the charges.

The offences occurred between 2013 and 2015, during which time officers discovered more than 1,000 images on Briggs' computer, including 1,000 category A images considered the most serious. The collection also featured an illegal cartoon and extreme pornography depicting child abuse. The court heard that these materials portrayed the exploitation and abuse of children, fuelling a harmful trade.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Emma Peters addressed Briggs directly, emphasising the gravity of his actions. She stated: "What those images portray is child abuse and those who view them fuel the trade which causes children to be abused which is why the courts take such a dim view of cases like this." The judge noted the prevalence of such crimes and their devastating impact, saying: "It is so prevalent now and it is awful so many children in the world are abused for the gratification of men like you." She highlighted that police actively monitor access to these images, leading to frequent detections and prosecutions.

Judge Peters acknowledged Briggs' previous good character and his career history as a policeman and later as an IT consultant. However, she pointed out the consequences: "You have lost your good character. You have been a proud working man throughout your life first as a policeman and then as an IT consultant but you are now set to lose your job." Briggs is indeed facing dismissal from his current IT firm role and must sell his house to cover £40,000 in accrued debt as a result of the proceedings.

Instead of immediate custody, Briggs received an 18-month prison sentence suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid work and placed under a 12-month supervision order. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years, and a sexual harm prevention order will be imposed. The case was handled at Chelmsford Crown Court, with the prosecuting force being Essex Police, as determined from the local reporting context.
