Offence Summary

Francis Wells was convicted of raping a child, indecent assaults, and indecency with a child in Cornwall decades ago, showing no remorse for his brutal abuse.

Full Description

Francis Wells, an 81-year-old man from Barnoldswick in Lancashire, was sentenced at Truro Crown Court for a series of historic sexual offences committed against children in Cornwall decades ago. The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which included two counts of rape of a child, two counts of indecent assault, and two counts of indecency with a child.

Prosecutor Bethany Rickerby presented impact statements from the victims, who described the lifelong trauma inflicted by Wells' actions. One victim stated: 'I hope it is recognised the life long and far reaching harm his choices have caused and I hope he can never inflict that pain again.' The offences, described as 'brutal' by His Honour Judge Simon Carr, had a devastating effect on the victims' lives, influencing every aspect of their existence.

Defending Wells, Robert Smith highlighted the offender's advanced age, noting that he would turn 82 that month and might never leave prison. Despite this, Judge Carr emphasised Wells' lack of remorse and insight into the harm caused, stating: 'You have no insight into the harm you've caused and no care for anyone but yourself.' Wells had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The sentencing took place on 7 April 2026, resulting in a 22-year custodial term, ensuring Wells would likely spend the remainder of his life behind bars. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life. Police Staff Investigator Jo Wilson commended the victims' bravery in coming forward, which led to justice being served after a lengthy investigation.
