Offence Summary

Elena Birovescu assisted in the sexual exploitation by laundering money obtained from the victim's forced prostitution through her bank account.

Full Description

Elena Birovescu, 27, played a supporting role in the exploitation of a vulnerable woman forced into sex work in Hull, primarily by handling the illicit proceeds through money laundering. As Bonculescu's sister-in-law, she allowed £5,000 from the woman's sexual services to be transferred into her bank account, facilitating the financial gains from the prostitution. Although initially charged with arranging or facilitating the travel of the woman for exploitation alongside Gheorge Bonculescu, this charge was dropped. Birovescu instead admitted to a money laundering offence of acquiring criminal property.

The victim, who escaped and sought help from police at Hull Paragon station in 2022, described being kept as a 'prisoner' with no freedom, controlled by Bonculescu, while Birovescu aided in managing the earnings. Birovescu claimed ignorance of the money's source, insisting it came from Bonculescu's car-selling business. However, during the court proceedings at Hull Crown Court, she maintained this defence, but Judge Mark Bury dismissed it as lies, calling it 'inconceivable' and 'nonsensical' given her awareness of the woman's situation and disappearance.

Prosecutor Michele Stuart-Lofthouse outlined how Birovescu received cash deposits into her account, sometimes from the victim herself and sometimes from others, all tied to the prostitution activities. In mitigation, Cathy Kioko-Gilligan noted that Birovescu now accepted the money's origin from prostitution. Judge Bury highlighted her knowledge of the ongoing exploitation, especially as she joined searches for the escaped woman. Unlike Bonculescu, who received a custodial sentence, Birovescu was given a six-month suspended prison sentence with no further requirements, reflecting her secondary but complicit role.

The case, investigated by Humberside Police, exposed the network of manipulation involved. Detective Sergeant Richard Kirk described Birovescu and Bonculescu as 'predators who manipulated a vulnerable woman' for financial gain, praising the victim's courage in reporting the abuse. This incident illustrates the broader context of sexual exploitation rings, where accomplices like Birovescu enable the core offenders through financial handling, contributing to the victim's lack of independence and coercion into continued sex work.
