Offence Summary

Tom Walsh, a former cheerleading coach, was convicted of multiple child sex offences including sexual abuse of three girls and possession and distribution of child abuse images, for which he received a 15-year custodial sentence.

Full Description

Tom Walsh, a 37-year-old former cheerleading coach from Prescot, Merseyside, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of child sex offences committed between 2011 and 2020. Walsh was found guilty on 28 charges following a trial at Bolton Crown Court, which concluded on 2 February 2024. The offences involved the sexual abuse of three young girls, possession and distribution of indecent images of children, and grooming activities conducted both in person and online.

Walsh exploited his position as a cheerleading coach to gain access to two of the victims, who were teenagers at the time and encountered him through cheerleading activities in Manchester and Liverpool. He groomed and sexually abused these girls, betraying the trust placed in him as a supposed father figure and friend. The third victim was contacted by Walsh online when she was just 13 years old; over the subsequent six years, he groomed her, sexually abused her, and even sent her child abuse images. Additionally, Walsh communicated with other girls across the UK via the Snapchat app to obtain indecent images, using screen recording software to save evidence of these interactions on his devices.

The investigation began in 2020 through the efforts of the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU), where covert officers engaged with Walsh online, uncovering his sexual interest in young girls. This led to his arrest on 20 August 2020 on suspicion of possession and distribution of child abuse images. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) subsequently took over, identifying numerous indecent images and incriminating messages on his devices. Three victims were formally identified during the probe, with Detective Constable Ceri Martin playing a key role in supporting them to come forward.

Walsh was sentenced on 5 February 2024 at Bolton Crown Court to 15 years' imprisonment, followed by 5 years on licence. He also received a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and was placed on the sex offenders' register for life. Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne Keenaghan of GMP's Public Protection Division stated: 'This was an incredibly difficult investigation, but I am pleased the defendant will now finally answer for his despicable actions. Walsh was placed in a position of authority and he professed to be a father figure and friend to his victims, but he was their abuser.' Detective Chief Inspector Al Burns of YHROCU added: 'Our team of online investigators work tirelessly to ensure that individuals like Tom Walsh are identified and children can be safeguarded and removed from further harm.'

The case highlights the predatory nature of Walsh's behaviour, targeting vulnerable children in trusted environments like cheerleading and online platforms. Sources: Greater Manchester Police official news release, dated 5 February 2024.
