Offence Summary

Marie Black was convicted of 23 offences including rape, conspiracy to rape, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity against five children under 13.

Full Description

Marie Black, aged 34 from Atkinson Close, Norwich, was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court on 27 July 2015 of 23 serious offences related to child sexual abuse and cruelty. As the central figure in a harrowing case involving five victims all under the age of 13, Black orchestrated and participated in the systematic abuse of these children over several years.

The trial, which lasted three months, revealed that Black incited others to commit abuse and directly engaged in acts including rape and forcing children into sexual activities. Victims described being subjected to regular sexual abuse at pre-arranged 'sex parties', where they were compelled to perform sexual acts with each other and adults. Several victims recounted watching Black and co-offender Jason Adams taking photographs while laughing during these assaults. The offences also encompassed conspiracy to rape and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Allegations first came to light in 2010, but it was not until December 2012 that sufficient evidence allowed Norfolk Constabulary's Safeguarding and Investigations Department to advance the case, leading to arrests in 2013. Following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service East of England Complex Case Unit, Black was charged in January and June 2014 alongside nine others with a total of 101 offences.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Hornby, described the case as the 'most harrowing' he had dealt with in 23 years of policing, emphasising Black's role at the centre of the abuse: 'Marie Black has been found to be at the centre of this abuse and incited others to commit abuse against them. She thought they would never speak out.' The verdict was hailed as a testament to the victims' bravery and the dedication of professionals involved.

Black was remanded in custody pending sentencing on 28 September 2015. Norfolk Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the national lead for child protection, underscored the case's significance in highlighting the prevalence of child sexual abuse and the societal duty to report suspicions.
