Full Description

Michael Barker, a 71-year-old pensioner from Albert Hill in Durham, was convicted at Swindon Crown Court on October 6 of multiple historic child sex offences committed against three teenage girls over several decades.

The offences, which Barker had previously pleaded not guilty to, included six counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14, two counts of raping a female under 16 years of age, and one count of gross indecency with a girl under 14. A jury found him guilty on all charges following a trial.

Many of the abuses occurred between 1974 and 1985 in Chippenham and Bishop Auckland, targeting young girls who knew and trusted Barker. Additionally, between November 6, 1995, and August 8, 1999, Barker indecently assaulted a teenage girl in Swindon. The assaults often took place in the victims' own homes, where they should have felt safe, robbing them of their childhoods.

Detective Constable Nicola Ainsley of Wiltshire Police praised the victims' courage in reporting the offences despite the passage of time. She described Barker as an 'abhorrent individual' whose behaviour escalated over the years, and noted that his denial of wrongdoing forced the case to trial, causing further distress to the victims. Ainsley emphasised the lifelong impact of such childhood abuse and hoped the guilty verdict would provide some closure.

Following the conviction, the hearing was adjourned for a pre-sentence report by the probation service. Barker was remanded in custody and is required to sign onto the sex offenders' register. He is scheduled to return to Swindon Crown Court for sentencing at a later date.
