Offence Summary

David Newsom was jailed for 14 years after pleading guilty to raping and sexually assaulting a boy over a period of nine years, starting when the victim was around 10 years old.

Full Description

David Newsom, a 44-year-old man from Uckfield, East Sussex, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the long-term sexual abuse of a young boy. The abuse, which involved serious sexual offences, began in 2017 when the victim was approximately 10 years old and continued until October 2025, just one month before Newsom's arrest.

Sussex Police arrested Newsom on 18 November 2025 at his home on Regency Close, Uckfield, following a brave disclosure by the victim about the sustained abuse he had endured. Charges were authorised the following day, and Newsom appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court, where he was remanded in custody. The offences charged included one count of rape, four counts of sexual assault against a child under 13, and three counts of sexual activity with a child.

On 7 January 2026, at Lewes Crown Court, Newsom pleaded guilty to all eight offences and was remanded in custody pending sentencing. The case proceeded to Brighton Crown Court on 23 March 2026, where Judge [name not specified] imposed the 14-year custodial sentence, reflecting the gravity of the prolonged abuse over nearly a decade.

  • The abuse spanned from 2017 to 2025, targeting a boy who was around 10 years old at the outset.
  • Newsom's guilty plea spared the victim from having to give evidence at trial.
  • The investigation was led by Detective Constable Nandi Luthuli of Sussex Police.

Detective Constable Nandi Luthuli, who led the investigation for Sussex Police, commended the victim's courage in speaking out. She stated, 'Without the victim’s courage in speaking out about the sexual abuse he endured, this could have continued unchecked.' Luthuli emphasised the police's commitment to holding abusers accountable, adding, 'Let there be no doubt. Anyone abusing children will be investigated and held accountable.' The sentencing marked the closure of this distressing chapter, allowing the victim to begin the process of healing.

This case underscores the importance of victims coming forward, as highlighted by Sussex Police in their official statement on the matter. The force's thorough investigation ensured that Newsom faced justice for his crimes committed within the United Kingdom.
