Offence Summary

Kieran Watson was jailed for downloading and distributing indecent images of children after police seized his phone and laptop containing hundreds of illegal files, many featuring young children.

Full Description

A 27-year-old man from Kirkcaldy, Fife, has been imprisoned for child pornography offences following the discovery of extensive illegal material on his electronic devices. Kieran Watson, residing at Bethelfield Place, appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court for sentencing after admitting to downloading and distributing indecent images of children.

The offences spanned two periods: between 29 December 2022 and 4 January 2024, Watson downloaded indecent images of children, and between 28 May and 4 June 2023, he distributed or showed such images to others. Police executed a search warrant at his home, seizing a mobile phone and a laptop. The phone contained 716 illegal files, predominantly images and videos of children aged between infants and 14 years. Among these were 281 videos totalling seven hours and 49 minutes, with 185 classified as category 'A' – the most severe grading of indecent content. The laptop held an additional 30 illegal files, mostly also in category 'A'. Further investigation revealed that Watson had distributed material via the KIK messaging application and his Gmail account, including content depicting children as young as four years old.

Sheriff John MacRitchie reviewed a social work report during the hearing, which highlighted Watson's previous conviction. In September 2018, he had been jailed for 18 months for breaking into a woman's home in Kirkcaldy using a ladder, entering her bedroom while she was elsewhere in the house, and stealing her underwear. The report noted Watson's tendency to blame his local community for isolating him post-offending and the social work department for 'putting ideas in his head' during a sex offenders' course. Addressing these factors, Sheriff MacRitchie imposed a custodial sentence of 18 months and placed Watson on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

This case underscores ongoing efforts by Police Scotland to combat child sexual exploitation through device seizures and digital forensics. The court proceedings were reported by Fife Today on 15 January 2025, emphasising the severity of category 'A' material and the young ages of the victims depicted.
