Offence Summary

Vanessa George, a nursery worker, was jailed indefinitely for sexually abusing babies and toddlers in her care at Little Ted's Nursery and sharing indecent images of the abuse online.

Full Description

Vanessa George, aged 39 at the time, was employed as a nursery worker at Little Ted's Nursery in Plymouth, Devon, where she exploited her position of trust to commit heinous acts of child sexual abuse. In a case that shocked the nation, George was found to have abused multiple babies and toddlers under her care, capturing indecent images and videos of the assaults, which she then distributed online to a network of paedophiles.

The NSPCC investigation, which analysed court cases across the UK over the past 20 months, highlighted the broader context of online child sex abuse, revealing that over two million indecent images were circulated by 100 convicted offenders. George's case was one of the most depraved examples cited, with the court hearing how she 'plumbed new depths of depravity' by targeting the most vulnerable children, including babies. The images seized in such cases often fell into the most serious categories, depicting rape and severe sexual assault.

George's crimes came to light through police investigations into online child abuse networks. She pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to the sexual assault of children and the making and distribution of indecent images. In December 2009, she was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court to an indeterminate sentence for public protection, with a minimum tariff of seven months, effectively meaning she would remain imprisoned indefinitely unless deemed safe for release by the Parole Board. The judge emphasised the profound betrayal of trust and the lasting trauma inflicted on the victims and their families.

Diana Sutton, NSPCC head of public affairs and campaigns, commented on the scale of such offences in the broader study, stating: 'The scale of graphic child sex abuse pictures and videos over the internet is very alarming. Children and babies are being seriously sexually assaulted to feed the demand for these photos and videos.' George's actions underscored the charity's call for stronger measures against peer-to-peer file sharing and online exploitation, as reported in The Independent on 11 May 2010.
