Offence Summary

Habibul Haque was convicted of multiple rapes and sexual assaults against a woman in her 20s in St Helens, subjecting her to a prolonged series of offences that included assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Full Description

Habibul Haque, a 44-year-old man from St Helens, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison following his conviction for a series of serious sexual offences committed against a woman in her 20s. The offences, which were described by investigators as 'prolonged and appalling', came to light after the victim reported them to Merseyside Police in March 2025.

Haque appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, October 17, 2025, after being found guilty earlier that month at trial. He was convicted on four counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). The court heard details of the sustained abuse inflicted upon the victim, highlighting the severity and duration of the attacks.

Detective Constable Jaskarn Sandhu, who led the investigation for Merseyside Police, commended the victim's courage in coming forward. 'This was a prolonged and appalling series of offences and I hope this sentencing brings some comfort to her,' Sandhu stated. The investigation was described as complex, involving combined efforts from Merseyside Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which ultimately led to the jury seeing through Haque's lies based on the presented evidence.

In addition to the 18-year custodial sentence, Haque has been placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for life and issued with an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim. The case underscores the commitment of Merseyside Police to tackling sexual violence, with the sentencing serving as a reassurance of how seriously such offences are treated by the courts.
