Full Description

A young father from Talsarn has been sentenced to over five years in prison after being convicted of raping a woman at a party in Ceredigion. The incident, which occurred on October 30, 2022, took place at a rural property where the victim was surrounded by people largely unknown to her, exacerbating her vulnerability.

Swansea Crown Court heard details from prosecutor Tom Scapens, who described how the 20-year-old defendant, Joel Evans, committed the offence while intoxicated by alcohol and drugs. The victim, in a statement read to the court, recounted her terror: 'She was frozen, scared to move.' She further shared the lasting impact, stating, 'I’m still, even now, fearful of leaving the house by myself. Not just through fear of him, but fear of it happening again. Any male interaction now puts me on edge. I have lost trust in men.' The court process itself worsened her mental health, as she feared disbelief from others: 'I was frightened people would not believe me.'

Evans, now 23 and residing on the B4337 at Talsarn, denied the rape charge but was found guilty following a trial in July. This marked his first custodial sentence, despite having eight prior convictions for 13 offences, none sexual in nature. Defence barrister James Hartson acknowledged the offence's seriousness without diminishing its impact, noting Evans maintains his innocence post-verdict. Hartson highlighted Evans' recent fatherhood and the pain of separation from his child due to remand, emphasising, 'This is the defendant’s first custodial sentence.'

Judge Catherine Richards expressed dismay at character references suggesting the allegations were malicious, firmly stating to Evans, 'The jury were sure this woman did not come to court to tell malicious lies about you.' She imposed a sentence of five and a half years' imprisonment, of which Evans will serve up to two-thirds in custody before potential release on licence. Additionally, he must register as a sex offender for life, and the victim received a 10-year restraining order to protect her from further contact.

The case was reported by the Tivyside Advertiser, drawing on court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court. Dyfed-Powys Police provided imagery related to the sentencing, underscoring the rural context of the crime in west Wales.
