Offence Summary

Ben Bond, a self-confessed paedophile, sent emails containing Category A child abuse images to local organisations in Wakefield, resulting in psychological harm to a recipient. He was sentenced to a suspended 16-month jail term and placed on the sex offender register for 10 years.

Full Description

Ben Bond, a 29-year-old resident of Sycamore Court in Crofton, Wakefield, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for distributing and making indecent images of children. The court heard that in May 2022, Bond sent two emails containing child abuse images to a local government office and a healthcare service. These images included Category A material, the most serious category involving the rape of children, as well as Categories B and C.

The incident came to light when police were contacted following the receipt of the emails. Upon arresting Bond, officers seized two mobile phones and a tablet from his possession, uncovering more than 1,179 images and videos depicting the abuse of children as young as four years old. During police interviews, Bond initially provided no comment but later submitted a prepared statement attributing his actions to his paranoid schizophrenia, claiming he was not in control at the time.

Bond admitted to three offences of making indecent images and eight counts of distributing them. He had no previous convictions. In mitigation, his barrister, Rhianydd Clement, described Bond as frank about his sexual interest in children and seeking help. She noted his diagnosis of schizophrenia at age 17 and that he was experiencing a significant mental health episode involving visual and auditory hallucinations when the emails were sent. Clement characterised the behaviour as erratic and a 'cry for help' rather than targeted malice.

One recipient, a woman who opened the email, provided a victim impact statement read by prosecutor Beth Richardson. She described feeling 'repulsed' by the images, suffering from flashbacks, and stated that the psychological damage was 'immense' and had 'changed her life', necessitating therapy. Recorder Mark McKone KC, presiding over the case, acknowledged the 'huge impact' of Bond's actions on the worker, calling it a 'totally irrational thing to do and a wicked thing to do'.

Bond received a 16-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, along with an order to complete 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days with probation. He was also placed on the sex offender register for 10 years and subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order to restrict his internet use. The judge warned Bond that breaching the order would result in no second chance. The case was reported by the Wakefield Express on 11 March 2026, highlighting the devastating effects of such offences on innocent recipients.
