Full Description

A carer who exploited his position of trust has been jailed for a horrific sexual assault on a vulnerable patient in her own home. Angelo Regis, aged 37 and residing in Bridport, Dorset, was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment at Bournemouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to charges of attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault by touching.

The offences occurred on Monday, June 3, 2024, during a routine care visit. Regis, employed as a care assistant, attended the victim's home in the morning as part of her care package. The victim, a woman in her 80s, went to the bathroom, at which point Regis locked the front door and followed her. He then sexually assaulted her in the bathroom before attempting to rape her in her bedroom. The incident was reported to Dorset Police two days later, on June 5, 2024, leading to Regis's arrest on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

During police interview, Regis denied the offences, but detectives secured DNA evidence that directly linked him to the crimes. He was charged the following day, on June 7, 2024. At the sentencing hearing, which took place recently at Bournemouth Crown Court, Regis appeared with the assistance of an interpreter. In addition to the custodial sentence, he has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.

Detective Constable Lucy Johnson, of Dorset Police County Safeguarding Hub, commented on the case: “Angelo Regis took advantage of his position and the vulnerabilities of his victim to subject her to a truly terrifying and horrific sexual assault.” She praised the victim's courage in reporting the matter and emphasised the police commitment to investigating such offences thoroughly. The case was prosecuted with support from the Crown Prosecution Service and partner agencies, ensuring the offender was held accountable.

This incident highlights the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals relying on home care services, with Dorset Police underscoring their dedication to safeguarding and supporting victims throughout the process.
