Full Description

At Bristol Crown Court on 16 March 2024, Jonathan Hill, a 39-year-old resident of Locking Road in Weston-super-Mare, appeared after pleading guilty to the offence of assault of a man aged 16 or over by penetration, a charge that constitutes a serious sexual assault under UK law.

The court, presided over by His Honour Judge Richardson, imposed a two-year custodial sentence on Hill, which was suspended for a period of two years. This means that Hill avoided immediate imprisonment provided he complies with the terms of his sentence. In addition to the suspended term, Hill was ordered to engage in a nine-month mental health treatment programme to address underlying issues contributing to his offending behaviour. He was also mandated to undergo 20 days of alcohol abstinence and monitoring, reflecting potential factors in the case.

Further measures included registration on the sex offenders' register with Avon and Somerset Police for ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. A ten-year restraining order was granted to protect the victim from any contact by Hill. Financial penalties were also applied: Hill must pay £3,000 in compensation directly to the victim and a £187 victim surcharge to fund support services for those affected by crime.

Should Hill fail to adhere to any of these conditions, the case would be brought back before Judge Richardson for potential activation of the suspended sentence. The proceedings took place at Bristol Crown Court, which serves the Avon and Somerset area, and the case was reported by The Weston Mercury on 17 March 2024. No specific details about the circumstances of the assault were disclosed in open court reporting, in line with protections for victims of sexual offences.
