Full Description

Florin Calin Trifan, a 40-year-old Romanian national residing in Harrow, has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for a series of rapes and sexual assaults committed against a vulnerable woman in her 20s who has learning and physical disabilities. The offences took place at the victim's family home in Harrow between January 2015 and January 2016. Trifan, who was known to the victim and her family, exploited his familiarity to control and manipulate her throughout this period.

The case came to light in January 2016 when the victim disclosed the abuse to a charity support worker. Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command arrested Trifan on 29 January 2016. Following a trial at Harrow Crown Court, he was found guilty on Friday, 9 March, of rape and sexual assault. Sentencing occurred on Wednesday, 25 April, where Judge [Name not specified in article] imposed the 20-year custodial sentence, reflecting the gravity of the crimes and Trifan's ongoing risk to the public.

  • Offences: Multiple counts of rape and sexual assault against a woman with learning disabilities.
  • Period: January 2015 to January 2016.
  • Location: Victim's family home in Harrow.
  • Arrest: 29 January 2016 by Metropolitan Police.
  • Trial: Harrow Crown Court, guilty verdict on 9 March.
  • Sentencing: 25 April, 20 years' imprisonment.

In addition to the prison term, Trifan was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits him from working with any female with learning disabilities, residing at an address with any such female, or being left unsupervised with them. The investigating officer, DC Angie Meadows from the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, commented on the case: 'Trifan controlled and manipulated the victim throughout his campaign of offences against her, causing her, and subsequently her family, considerable torment. Throughout the investigation he has maintained that his behaviour was merely that of a 'weak man'. The sentencing today reflects the seriousness of the offences and that Trifan poses a risk of serious harm to the public.' This statement underscores the manipulative nature of the abuse and the significant harm inflicted on the victim and her family.

The Metropolitan Police's investigation highlighted the challenges in determining the exact number of assaults due to the prolonged period and the victim's disabilities, but the evidence presented at trial was sufficient to secure the conviction. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities exploited in such crimes and the importance of support services in bringing perpetrators to justice.
