Full Description

David Richardson, a 54-year-old man from Kent, has been sentenced to an indeterminate term of imprisonment for the rape and sexual abuse of a young girl in Faversham. The case came to light after the victim, who was a child at the time of the offences, bravely came forward to report the crimes to the authorities.

Richardson, previously residing at Roselands in Walmer, Deal, stood trial at Maidstone Crown Court. Following a seven-day trial, he was convicted on Tuesday of two counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of rape, and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity. The offences were described in court as particularly despicable, targeting an innocent child and causing significant damage to the victim and her family.

Sentencing Richardson, Judge Michael Lawson QC characterised him as an extremely dangerous individual. The judge imposed an indeterminate sentence of 14 years, requiring Richardson to serve at least seven years before becoming eligible to apply for parole. Even then, he must demonstrate that he is no longer a danger to the public. Additionally, Richardson will be placed on the sexual offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring.

Detective Constable John Milham of Kent Police commended the victim's courage and determination, stating: "It is due to her courage and determination that this man is not able to reoffend." He highlighted how the victim's life had been turned upside down by Richardson's actions but emphasised that without her contribution, justice would not have been served. Milham expressed hope that the sentence would encourage other victims of sexual abuse to come forward and report their aggressors.

The case was handled by Kent Police and prosecuted through HM Courts & Tribunals Service. Richardson's conviction and sentencing underscore the severe consequences for those who perpetrate child sex offences, with the indeterminate nature of the sentence reflecting the court's assessment of his ongoing risk.
