Full Description

A Cleethorpes man, Clive Lennon, aged 44, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of serious sexual and abusive offences against a woman known to him. The case, which unfolded in Hull Crown Court, highlighted a pattern of unrelenting derogatory behaviour, sexual assault, and coercive control that significantly impacted the victim's life.

The investigation began in April 2025 when Humberside Police received a report from the victim, who disclosed that she had endured verbal abuse, physical assaults, and controlling behaviour from Lennon. She specifically identified Clive Lennon as the perpetrator. The Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Team promptly launched an inquiry, resulting in Lennon's arrest on suspicion of coercive and controlling behaviour. He was initially released on bail while further enquiries were conducted.

During continued engagement with the victim, she revealed an additional incident of sexual assault by penetration committed by Lennon on a separate occasion. Officers responded immediately, arresting Lennon at his address and taking him into custody on the new charge. In police interviews, Lennon denied all allegations, insisting they were untrue. He was remanded in custody as the case was built, incorporating witness accounts and victim impact statements.

The trial, lasting five days in October 2025 at Hull Crown Court, culminated in Lennon's conviction for sexual assault by penetration and coercive and controlling behaviour. Sentencing occurred last week at the same court, where he received a seven-year custodial sentence and a lifetime restraining order. Leading the investigation, Police Constable Imran Akbar from Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit, stated: “This woman has been subjected to unrelenting derogatory and degrading abuse, sexually assaulted and made to feel worthless and hopeless. Lennon repeatedly and continuously engaged in unspeakable behaviour towards the woman. He was controlling and coercive, degrading, assaulted her on numerous occasions, threatened her and her pets; ultimately significantly impacting her day-to-day life.”

The case underscores the severe consequences of domestic and sexual abuse, with Akbar commending the victim's bravery in coming forward, which led to Lennon's accountability. The offences took place in the Cleethorpes area of North East Lincolnshire, under the jurisdiction of Humberside Police.
