An elderly man from Grimsby, Edward Sherriff, aged 77, has been imprisoned for 22 years following his conviction on multiple child sex offences committed over four decades. The case, which came to light through courageous reports from victims, highlights a prolonged pattern of abuse against vulnerable children.
Sherriff was found guilty after a seven-day trial in July at Grimsby Crown Court. The charges encompassed 19 counts of non-recent sexual offences against three individuals, including rape of a child under 13, four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 16, three counts of gross indecency assault, and eight counts of indecent assault and exposure. These acts occurred between 1980 and 2022, demonstrating a sustained abuse of trust where Sherriff manipulated, threatened, and emotionally abused his victims to maintain silence.
On Wednesday, at Grimsby Crown Court, Sherriff received his sentence of 22 years' imprisonment. In addition, he was issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order. He is also required to register as a sex offender for life. The sentencing underscores the severity of his calculated and deplorable actions, which caused unimaginable harm to the victims and their families.
Detective Sergeant Chris Clarke, who led the investigation for Humberside Police, commented on the case: “While no sentence can truly reflect the trauma and lasting impact of this man’s actions, I hope today’s outcome may provide some closure from an extremely painful journey for the victims and their family. Sherriff’s actions are utterly deplorable, a calculated and prolonged abuse of trust against innocent and vulnerable children, spanning more than four decades from 1980 to 2022. He deliberately manipulated, threatened, and emotionally abused his victims to silence them, committing sustained abuse that has caused unimaginable harm.” DS Clarke also praised the victims: “I’d like to commend the victims for their extraordinary bravery and strength in coming forward and throughout the entirety of the investigation and complex court proceedings.”
The case was reported in the Grimsby News by Gi Grimsby on 11 December 2025, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts to combat historical child sex offences in the region. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the long-term effects of such crimes and the importance of victim support in bringing perpetrators to justice.
