Offence Summary

Ian Wooler was sentenced for creating indecent images of children after pleading guilty to the offences. The illegal material was discovered through National Crime Agency intelligence linked to his IP address.

Full Description

Ian Wooler, a 65-year-old financial advisor from Boxford, Suffolk, was sentenced at Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on January 21, 2025, after pleading guilty to making indecent images of children. The offences involved creating two Category A and seven Category B indecent images, which occurred on or before November 29, 2024.

The case came to light following intelligence from the National Crime Agency that linked illegal material to Wooler’s IP address. Police attended his home in Boxford and conducted a consensual search, during which Wooler voluntarily handed over his laptop. He admitted to the officers, “you are going to find stuff,” and later provided a prepared statement while declining to answer further questions.

Wooler, who had no previous convictions, appeared in court for sentencing after entering his guilty plea. The court heard from the defence about his remorse and his efforts to understand the harm caused by his actions. Described as a long-standing financial advisor specialising in pensions and a committed member of his community, Wooler was addressed by the chair of the bench, who stated: “Up until this recent event, you have been a person of good character. We have taken into account your guilty plea and the remorse you have shown, as well as the actions you have taken on your own initiative.”

In sentencing, Wooler received a 12-month community order, including 12 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a specified programme to address his offending behaviour. All electronic equipment used in the offences was forfeited and destroyed. The case was reported by the East Anglian Daily Times, highlighting the role of the National Crime Agency in identifying such crimes.
