Offence Summary

Aled Eifion Jones, a 46-year-old farmer, sexually assaulted a young woman outside a pub in Carmarthenshire by repeatedly attempting to kiss her, groping her, and touching her body and groin area while intoxicated.

Full Description

A drunken farmer from west Wales has been jailed for sexually assaulting a young woman outside a country pub. Aled Eifion Jones, aged 46 and described as a respected member of the farming community, targeted the victim in the car park of a pub in Carmarthenshire in May 2020.

The incident began earlier that evening when Jones, who was in the pub, made inappropriate comments about the woman's body. The victim, in her early 20s, felt uncomfortable but initially laughed off the remarks. Later, as she was in the car park, the intoxicated Jones approached her and made repeated attempts to kiss her despite her clear disinterest. He grabbed her, laughed at her efforts to escape, and forced her hand onto his crotch to feel his erect penis. Jones then grabbed her by the neck and touched her body and groin area, persisting in his unwanted advances.

The woman managed to free herself only when Jones, stumbling due to his heavy intoxication, collided with a wall. As she fled, he swore at her. The assault left the victim feeling a profound loss of security and innocence, knocking her self-confidence and causing her to become more withdrawn, less trusting, and plagued by nightmares of sexual assault. In her victim impact statement read at Swansea Crown Court, she highlighted how Jones's refusal to take responsibility by pleading not guilty had exacerbated her trauma. She benefits from lifelong anonymity as a victim of a sexual offence.

Jones, of Cilycwm near Llandovery, was convicted of sexual assault following a trial. His defence, represented by Kate Williams, emphasised that he had no previous convictions and was portrayed in character references as a hardworking, respected figure in the local and farming communities, with supportive family and potential for rehabilitation. However, Judge Catherine Richards rejected calls for a community sentence, stating the offence was too serious for anything but immediate custody. She described the attack as frightening for the victim, noting Jones's lack of remorse and denial of his actions, despite his positive personal attributes as a hard worker and committed father.

Sentencing occurred at Swansea Crown Court on 27 November 2020. Jones received a 12-month prison sentence, serving up to half in custody before release on licence. He was placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period. The case was reported by Wales Online, with details from court proceedings covered by crime reporter Jason Evans.
