Offence Summary

Amjad Hussain, a father-of-five, was convicted of grooming and repeatedly raping a vulnerable teenage girl over a decade ago, driving her to remote locations where he plied her with alcohol before attacking her.

Full Description

Amjad Hussain, 35, from Adar Street in Keighley, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the systematic grooming and rape of a vulnerable teenage girl in 2009 and 2010. As part of West Yorkshire Police's Operation Dalesway investigation, Hussain was one of five men found guilty following a trial in October at Bradford Crown Court. The offences involved repeated sexual abuse that left the victim with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Hussain's specific crimes included two counts of rape and an additional offence relating to multiple incident rapes. According to court evidence, he drove the victim to remote locations, provided her with alcohol, and then carried out the attacks. Judge Andrew Hatton, during sentencing, described Hussain's actions as 'gross abuse' and noted that the evidence showed Hussain was responsible for 'passing on' the teenager to other men, exacerbating the exploitation.

The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, endured abuse that the judge highlighted as a significant factor in her current mental state. 'The gross abuse she suffered at the hands of you and others like you is a significant factor in her mental state now,' Judge Hatton stated. This case forms part of a broader investigation into a rape gang's systematic abuse of the teenager, with four other men—Omar Safdar, Barber Hussain, Hassan Basharat, and Imran Sabir—jailed in February for their involvement.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes of West Yorkshire Police commended the victim's courage in reporting the offences, stating, 'The abuse she endured robbed her of her childhood and I hope seeing all of these men sent to prison for these horrendous offences she was subjected to, will allow her to start to look forward to the future.' Hussain must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and will register as a sex offender for life. The case was heard at Bradford Crown Court, with reporting by BBC News on 18 February 2022.
