Offence Summary

Ammar Moqbal was jailed for nine years after being found guilty of raping a child at a party, where he gave the victim alcohol before the assault.

Full Description

Ammar Moqbal, a 32-year-old man from Sheffield, was sentenced to nine years in prison at Sheffield Crown Court for the rape of a child aged between 13 and 15. The incident occurred at a party where Moqbal, who was a stranger to the victim, provided the youngster with alcohol prior to committing the sexual offence.

According to details presented in court, the victim left the party following the assault and sought help from a member of the public. This led to the matter being reported to the police, resulting in Moqbal's arrest and subsequent charges of rape of a child under 16. Despite pleading not guilty, Moqbal was convicted by a jury in October 2025 after a trial that highlighted the traumatic impact of his actions.

During the sentencing hearing, the victim's impact statement was read aloud, providing poignant insight into the profound effects of the crime. The statement read: 'What happened to me that night has affected each and every part of my life. That night I was with my friends and could have never known what was about to happen. I found myself in a situation I could not control and as a child could not see a way out of. I lost the normality of just being in school. I couldn’t concentrate on my work or studies, as there was not enough head space for me to deal with the trauma I suffered, as well as what others were saying to me. I think the best way to describe my state of mind now, is similar to suffering a bereavement. It's like I am grieving for the life I feel I have lost. I worry that one day these all of these things will overcome me. I can't and will not allow this to happen. I will not let those who harmed me win, that time is done.' This testimony underscored the lasting psychological harm inflicted upon the young victim.

The case was heard at Sheffield Crown Court, with the conviction reported by ITV News Calendar on 4 March 2026. Notably, three other men who had been charged with similar offences in relation to the same incident were acquitted by a jury in February 2024 and released without further action.
