Offence Summary

Full Description

Edward Griffith-Davies, a 42-year-old man from Bryntirion, Bedwas, Caerphilly, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, 5 January 2024, after pleading guilty to a series of serious sexual offences involving indecent images of children.

The court heard that Griffith-Davies had been involved in sharing and distributing child sexual abuse material across various online platforms since 2011. To gain access to a Telegram group dedicated to sharing such images, he caused a boy to pose naked while holding a sign bearing the group's name in June 2023. This act allowed him to become an administrator of the group, where sickening images of children, ranging from babies to teenagers, were exchanged. Many of the images depicted children showing signs of pain, and the material included over 600 Category A (most serious) indecent images and more than 300 Category B images, primarily featuring children aged between four and 10. He also admitted to possessing a prohibited image of a child and extreme pornography, including content involving bestiality in other chats.

Judge Gary Wodhall, presiding over the case, stated that Griffith-Davies had an obvious sexual interest in children and that his offences were so serious that only immediate custody can be justified. The judge took the offence of causing a boy to engage in sexual activity as the lead charge, noting that while it did not involve direct sexual assault, it was aggravated by the vulnerability of the victim and the distressing nature of the images. In mitigation, the court considered Griffith-Davies' previous good character, his frank admissions, expressions of remorse, and mental health issues. He received a one-third reduction in sentence for his guilty pleas.

  • Griffith-Davies made no comment during his police interview.
  • The offences were committed in St Helens, Merseyside, leading to a ban on him entering the area except for transit.
  • A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed, along with a lifetime requirement to notify police of his personal particulars.
  • He was also prohibited from contacting the victim for 15 years.

The sentencing followed an investigation by Merseyside Police, who provided evidence of his activities spanning from 2011 to 2024. Griffith-Davies appeared tearful via video link from custody during the hearing.
