Offence Summary

Jamie Terry was jailed for breaching a restraining order by contacting his ex-partner, whom he had previously subjected to severe domestic violence including setting her on fire, and for failing to comply with the sex offenders' register.

Full Description

Jamie Terry, a 41-year-old man from Abingdon Road, Oxford, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday, December 2, where he was sentenced for multiple breaches related to his history of domestic violence and non-compliance with legal restrictions.

The court heard that Terry had an extensive history of domestic abuse against his ex-partner. In 2018, he was accused of horrific acts, including setting the woman alight, urinating on a bed and forcing her to sleep on it, and stamping on her head. These incidents left the victim in fear, leading her to keep the relationship secret due to concerns over repercussions from Terry.

Earlier in the year, Terry was recalled to prison after texting his ex-partner in March, breaching a restraining order. He was released on October 14 but just four days later, on October 18, he failed to notify authorities of his address at a probation hotel in Oxford. Additionally, Terry pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching the restraining order and one count of failing to comply with the requirements of being on the sex offenders' register.

  • Prosecutor Kelly Purcell-Chandler described the breaches as deliberate, noting Terry's history of disobedience with court orders and his possession of a mobile phone containing intimate messages from two women, including his ex-partner.
  • In the messages, Terry asked his ex-partner for money and urged her to phone him, to which she responded she would ring after work.

In a victim impact statement, the ex-partner expressed ongoing fear: 'It has taken me ages to put this in writing. He always finds ways to call and text me. He tells me I'm being watched by people. He doesn't care what anyone says.' She was described by Judge Hassan Khan as extremely vulnerable and at extreme risk of harm from Terry.

During the hearing, Terry interjected from the dock, stating, 'It's all in the past mate.' Judge Khan rebuked him, replying, 'Don't call me mate.' Mitigating, Gareth James acknowledged the contact but noted the victim's responses did not excuse Terry's actions.

Terry, who has 12 convictions for 24 offences, was ultimately jailed for a total of eight months in custody. The case was reported by the Oxford Mail, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by Terry despite previous interventions.
