Full Description

A couple from Fife, Scotland, have been jailed for their involvement in child sexual abuse and extreme pornography offences spanning from 2021 to 2024. Sylvia Carroll, 42, received a nine-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges including the sexual abuse of a boy now aged 10, possession and distribution of indecent images of the child, and possession of extreme pornographic material depicting sexual activity between humans and animals.

The case came to light following confidential information received by police, who subsequently seized 34 IT devices from the couple's home in Cairneyhill. Investigations revealed hundreds of illegal videos and images. On Sylvia Carroll's phone, detectives uncovered a WhatsApp thread with over 17,000 messages exchanged with a contact, in which she described and shared contemporaneous video files of her sexually abusing the boy. She also shared footage of herself molesting the child and was recorded engaging in sexual activity with a dog. The extreme pornography she possessed included explicit and realistic depictions of sexual activity between a person and dogs and horses.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Judge Lady Poole described the actions as 'disgraceful', stating: 'The High Court sees many cases involving serious crime but this case is particularly sickening and shocking. The behaviour of both of you has been depraved and disgusting. The consequences for victims of your behaviour and others indirectly affected have been far-reaching and devastating.' Carroll was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and will be supervised for three years upon her release.

Her defence, represented by Gordon Martin KC, highlighted her adverse childhood experiences, noting that 'she is somebody who is clearly vulnerable'. The offences occurred between 2021 and 2024, with sentencing taking place on Friday in the High Court in Edinburgh. Police Scotland Fife division led the investigation based on the location of the crimes.
