Graham Patterson, a 37-year-old man from Merseyside, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of online child sex offences, following a joint investigation by the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) and the Metropolitan Police. The case, heard at Liverpool Crown Court, exposed Patterson's calculated exploitation of vulnerable children, building on his extensive prior history of sexual offences against minors.
Patterson's criminal background includes a six-year jail term in 2016 for causing and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, as well as taking, making, and distributing indecent images of children. In 2021, he received an additional 12-month sentence for possessing indecent images, and in 2024, he was given a 24-month suspended sentence for failing to comply with notification requirements. Despite these convictions and ongoing monitoring, Patterson continued his predatory behaviour.
The latest offences came to light through the NWROCU and Metropolitan Police investigation, which revealed that in November 2024, Patterson created two fake profiles on a social media messaging platform, posing as both a male and a female teenager. He initiated conversations with individuals he believed shared a sexual interest in children, boasting about coercing children into sending indecent photos. Analysis of devices seized during his arrest on 11 December 2024 uncovered evidence of him grooming and extorting children aged 11 to 16. Patterson blackmailed his victims by threatening to share their indecent images with friends and family unless they provided more material.
On the day of his arrest, officers found Patterson living in his car, where they seized multiple electronic devices that had not been disclosed to his sex offender manager, leading to an additional arrest for breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised 41 charges against him, including blackmail, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual communication with a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and making and distributing indecent images of children. Patterson pleaded guilty to all charges at Liverpool Crown Court on 10 June 2025.
Sentencing occurred on Friday 24 October 2025, with Patterson receiving 16 years' imprisonment and an additional five years on licence. Detective Sergeant Alastair Macmillan from the NWROCU commented: 'This case highlights the relentless efforts of our officers to protect children from online predators. Patterson’s actions were calculated and cruel, and today’s sentencing reflects the seriousness of his crimes. This was a complex and deeply disturbing case. Patterson deliberately targeted vulnerable children and used fear and manipulation to exploit them. We hope this outcome brings some measure of justice to the victims and their families.' The collaboration between the Metropolitan Police and NWROCU was instrumental in identifying Patterson’s online activities and securing his conviction.
The case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of cross-agency cooperation in tackling child sexual exploitation. Patterson's offences spanned multiple instances of manipulation and abuse, affecting numerous young victims who were coerced through digital platforms.
