Offence Summary

Graeme Brown was jailed for 15 years after being convicted of raping eight women and committing an indecent assault on a man over a 13-year period between 2003 and 2016.

Full Description

Graeme Brown, a 33-year-old man from Renfrew, Scotland, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow for committing a series of vile sexual offences against multiple victims. The convictions stem from rapes carried out against eight women, who were either former partners or casual acquaintances, spanning from February 2003 to July 2016. Additionally, Brown was found guilty of an indecent assault on a man during this period.

The offences occurred in various locations including Erskine, Linwood, and Paisley. Despite the overwhelming evidence presented in court, Brown continues to protest his innocence, even claiming during his testimony that he was the victim. However, Judge Tom Hughes dismissed these claims, stating directly to Brown: "You have been convicted of vile sexual offences." The judge also commended the victims for their courage, noting: "I think it's appropriate to pay tribute to the fact in very difficult circumstances the witnesses have come to court and have given their evidence in a very dignified way."

Defence QC John Scullion argued on Brown's behalf, emphasising that he denies the offences and highlighting the context of the victims' social scene: "I make no criticism of the complainers but many gave evidence about their willingness to experiment sexually. Many of the victims were involved in a social scene in which there was casual sex and experimental sex." Despite this, the jury convicted Brown based on the evidence provided by the victims and other corroborating details. Brown showed no emotion as he was led away from the courtroom to begin his sentence.

As part of his punishment, Brown will be placed on the sex offenders register and subjected to three years of monitoring upon his release from prison. This case, reported by the BBC on 24 October 2018, underscores the long-term impact of such predatory behaviour and the importance of victims coming forward to seek justice.
