Annette Punter exchanged vile messages about young girls with her partner Colin Dawson and admitted to possessing extreme pornography and taking and distributing indecent images of children, resulting in a suspended prison sentence.

Full Description

Annette Punter, 65, from East Park in Wolverhampton, faced justice alongside her partner Colin Dawson in a case involving the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Punter pleaded guilty to being in possession of extreme pornography, as well as taking and distributing indecent images of children between 2 and 5 November 2018. She also admitted to conspiring with Dawson to take indecent images of children between 9 and 19 November 2018, during which time they exchanged hundreds of 'vile' messages about young girls.

Following her arrest, Punter told detectives that she had been manipulated by Dawson, with whom she was in a relationship at the time. Despite this claim, the court held her accountable for her direct involvement in the offences. The material involved indecent images of children, highlighting the couple's engagement in serious sexual exploitation activities. The case came to light through an investigation by West Midlands Police, who linked Dawson's home to online child abuse chats and subsequently seized devices containing the illicit content.

Punter was given a 20-month prison term, suspended for two years, reflecting the court's consideration of her circumstances while still imposing significant restrictions. She will be required to remain on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years. The proceedings were covered by BBC News on 12 February 2024, emphasising the collaborative and manipulative dynamics in the relationship that facilitated these crimes.

This case underscores the role of enablers in child sex offences, with Punter's actions contributing to the creation and spread of harmful material. West Midlands Police's thorough investigation ensured that both perpetrators were brought to account, preventing further harm.
