Full Description

Karl Davies, a 42-year-old man from Wirral, Merseyside, has been jailed for 20 years following a landmark case involving the sexual abuse of a vulnerable 13-year-old girl and encouragement of self-harm. The offences, which spanned from June 2023 to July 2024, were prosecuted under the Online Safety Act 2023, marking one of the first such cases in the country involving a child.

Davies employed sophisticated tactics to groom his victim, creating multiple fake Snapchat accounts under pseudonyms such as 'Ben', 'Chris', and 'Sean'. He initiated contact in June 2023 by messaging the girl, then aged 13, and quickly escalated to requesting and sharing explicit images. Posing as supportive figures, he alternated between building trust with compliments and resorting to blackmail when she resisted sending indecent materials. This manipulation continued for months, with Davies controlling all accounts from his home in Wirral.

  • The abuse involved repeated demands for videos, including those depicting the girl self-harming at his encouragement.
  • In June 2024, under the guise of 'Mark', Davies travelled from Wirral to Stockport to meet the girl, then 14, picking her up in her school uniform and sexually abusing her in his car on multiple occasions throughout June and July.
  • During these encounters, he provided her with a razor blade to facilitate self-harm and instructed her to send videos of the acts to his other fake accounts.

The girl bravely reported the abuse in January 2025, providing detailed accounts during a police interview. Greater Manchester Police launched a thorough investigation, tracing social media activity to Davies' address and linking a vehicle matching her description to his movements between Liverpool and Stockport. Davies was arrested on 11 February 2025 and offered no comment during questioning. He had previously pleaded guilty on 22 May 2025 at Manchester Crown Court to 17 offences, including ten counts of sexual activity with a child, four counts of grooming, two counts of arranging or facilitating child sex offences, and one count of encouraging or assisting serious self-harm.

Sentencing occurred on 20 October 2025 at Manchester Crown Court. In a victim impact statement read by the girl's social worker, the profound emotional and physical trauma inflicted was highlighted, noting the girl's astounding strength in coming forward. Detective Sergeant Robert Griffiths of Greater Manchester Police described Davies as a 'dangerous individual' who 'callously and methodically exploited a vulnerable girl', praising the victim's bravery and the investigative team's efforts. Senior Crown Prosecutor Stacey Gosling for CPS North West called the methods 'sophisticated', emphasising how Davies hid his identity to pose as a protector while inflicting 'vile and cruel abuse'.

The case underscores the dangers of online grooming, with Davies' actions severely impacting the victim's life. He will serve an additional five years on licence upon release.
