Offence Summary

Full Description

An 82-year-old man from Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for committing a series of serious sexual offences against a child. Ronald Short was convicted following a trial at Lincoln Crown Court on eight charges, which included two counts of attempted rape, four counts of assault by penetration, and two offences of sexual assault. The offences occurred when Short was in his early 60s, as detailed during the court proceedings.

Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hirst addressed Short directly, stating that he faced the prospect of spending the rest of his life in jail due to the gravity of his actions. The judge highlighted the profound impact on the victim, who provided a poignant impact statement describing the ongoing trauma. 'I regularly relive the trauma of what Ronald Short did to me,' the victim said. 'Since I reported Ronald Short to the police, I have suffered anxiety, panic attacks, and flashbacks of what happened.' Judge Hirst noted that it was evident the victim had endured post-traumatic stress disorder and was compelled to relive the abuse in a public courtroom setting.

David Eager, prosecuting, remarked during the hearing: 'It was always in the defendant's gift to admit his conduct. It was his choice to bring the matter to trial.' The case was investigated by Lincolnshire Police, with Detective Constable Kyle Barlow commenting afterwards: 'Although no outcome can take away the harm caused, we hope the knowledge that Ronald Short has been jailed will at least provide some comfort and aid the victim's process of recovery.'

In addition to the custodial sentence, a restraining order was imposed, prohibiting Short from any future contact with the victim. He has also been placed on the sex offenders' register for life. The trial and sentencing took place at Lincoln Crown Court, under the jurisdiction of HM Courts & Tribunals Service.
