A predatory sex offender targeted women and girls in the St Stephen’s area of Canterbury, leading to a swift police investigation and his subsequent jailing. Athian Majak, a 20-year-old resident of Downs Road, Canterbury, carried out a series of brazen assaults in public spaces during June 2024 and December 2023.
The incidents began in December 2023, with Majak committing additional unspecified offences. However, the pattern escalated in June 2024 when four women and girls reported being followed by a man who attempted to touch or grab them while they were simply going about their daily routines. In several cases, the victims deterred him by shouting, which caused him to flee. These attacks were described as predatory, with Majak openly committing criminal acts against unconsenting individuals in broad daylight.
On multiple occasions in June 2024, Majak followed his victims in the St Stephen’s area, attempting sexual touching or grabs. Previous reports from earlier in the month provided a description of the offender, aiding police identification. Investigators linked Majak to four incidents in June and further offences from December 2023 through detailed evidence gathering. The breakthrough came on Wednesday, 12 June 2024, when two Kent Police officers on patrol spotted a man matching the offender's description as he followed a woman. The officers immediately intervened, stopping and arresting Majak on the spot. During the subsequent investigation, detectives scrutinised CCTV footage, collaborated with victims and witnesses, and compiled compelling evidence to confirm his involvement in all reported cases.
Majak was charged with nine offences, including indecent exposure, sexual touching, and attempted sexual touching. At Canterbury Crown Court, he admitted to all charges. On Friday, 18 October 2024, he was sentenced to a three-year custodial term in a youth offenders’ institute. Investigating officer Detective Constable Kieran Kemp highlighted the predatory nature of the crimes, stating: “Athian Majak openly committed criminal acts against women and girls in public, while they were just trying to go about their day. They had not permitted him to approach them and do what he did.” Kemp also emphasised Kent Police's priority on tackling violence against women and girls, noting initiatives like walk and talk events and nighttime patrols to prevent such behaviour.
This case underscores the effectiveness of community policing and victim cooperation in bringing offenders to justice, ensuring Majak's removal from the streets of Canterbury.
