Full Description

A 54-year-old man from Walsall, Scott Bamford, has been imprisoned for three years following his conviction for attempting to groom and meet young children for sexual exploitation in Surrey. The case, investigated by specialist officers from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), highlights the dangers of online predation and the swift action taken by law enforcement to protect vulnerable children.

Bamford engaged in sexually explicit conversations on an online chat website, targeting three children: one aged just two years old and the other two under 11. He made concrete arrangements to meet them in Camberley earlier in 2022, intending to carry out child sexual abuse. On the designated day, Bamford drove to a car park in the town, where he was arrested by police. A search of his vehicle revealed incriminating items in the boot, including children's toys suitable for various ages, sweets, condoms, and lubricant, which he had brought with the clear intention of facilitating the offences.

The arrest occurred as part of a targeted operation by SEROCU, and Bamford was charged on the same day. Importantly, none of the intended victims were placed at actual risk, thanks to the proactive intervention by authorities. Earlier, Bamford had pleaded guilty to three counts of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence at Guildford Crown Court.

Sentencing took place on 17 February 2022 at Guildford Crown Court. In addition to the three-year custodial sentence, Bamford was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to sign the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely. Investigating officer Detective Constable Colin Haynes from SEROCU stated: 'Bamford had planned to carry out child sexual abuse and travelled with the intention of committing this offence against three children. This case demonstrates our continued priority to protect children from sexual exploitation from those who seek to do them harm.' The operation underscores the commitment of Surrey Police and partner units to safeguarding children from online threats.
