Tyrone Felton, a 54-year-old delivery driver from Neath, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court for attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempted sexual communications with a child, and arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence. The case arose from an undercover operation conducted by Tarian, the south Wales serious and organised crime unit, aimed at identifying potential online sex offenders.
In February 2024, Felton, using the online alias 'Dave1', initiated contact with a decoy profile on social media that purported to belong to a 14-year-old boy. The decoy explicitly discussed school life and confirmed his age, to which Felton responded that it was 'fine'. During their conversation, Felton inquired about the boy's underwear and whether he could 'accommodate' if they met, indicating clear sexual intent. Felton disclosed his occupation as a delivery driver and his current location, travelling from Cowbridge towards Haverfordwest in his company van.
Plans were arranged for Felton to meet the 'boy' at a public location in Carmarthen during his lunchtime, with the intention of picking him up and taking him back to the teen's house. Upon arrival at the rendezvous in his van, Felton was confronted by plain-clothes officers from Dyfed-Powys Police. A search of the vehicle revealed that its internal CCTV cameras had been deliberately obscured with a fleece jacket and caps, suggesting an attempt to conceal his actions.
Felton was arrested and taken to Dafen police station, where he answered 'no comment' to all questions in his interview. Details of the decoy profile, social media platforms, and exact meeting location were not disclosed in open court due to the ongoing nature of the Tarian operation. Felton has a prior conviction from 1991 for gross indecency with a child and attempted kidnapping of a child, involving exposing his penis to young children and inciting them to touch it. Judge Paul Thomas KC, during sentencing, remarked on Felton's 'paedophile tendencies' that had persisted for a considerable period, sometimes latent and sometimes active. The judge noted Felton's denial as evident in the pre-sentence report and urged him to confront his problem for the benefit of himself and society. He expressed hope that Felton would engage with sex offender education programmes available in custody.
Defending, Harry Dickens stated that Felton had intended to meet adult men online but his behaviour 'spiralled', and he could not explain the escalation. Felton expressed deep regret for his actions and their impact on his family as a father-of-two. With a one-third discount for his guilty pleas, Felton received a two-year custodial sentence, serving up to half in prison before release on licence. He was also made subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for the same period.
This case highlights the effectiveness of proactive policing in combating online child sexual exploitation in Wales, as reported by Wales Online on 15 March 2024.
