Offence Summary

Melissa Noon was convicted of multiple child sex offences including causing children to engage in sexual activity, sexual assault, and arranging child sex offences as part of an international paedophile ring that used a naturist website as a cover.

Full Description

Melissa Noon, aged 30, was at the centre of an international paedophile ring based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, alongside her partner Robert Hathaway. The ring operated under the guise of a naturist website, which was used to distribute indecent photographs and videos of children and to connect with like-minded individuals worldwide. Noon and Hathaway abused two British children under the age of 13, involving acts such as rape, attempted rape, and the use of sex aids. Police seized more than 20 sex aids from their home during the investigation.

The Hampshire Police investigation began after a tip-off from Australian authorities who uncovered a mirror-image ring abusing a young child there. Noon was in contact with this Australian group and shared images, including encouraging an Australian child to engage in sexual activity. Chat logs totalling 2,000 pages were recovered, along with 14,000 indecent images and 300 videos of child abuse.

At Portsmouth Crown Court, Noon was found guilty on 10 charges: three of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, one of causing a child to watch a sexual act, two of sexual assault of a child, two of arranging a child sex offence, one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and two of possessing indecent photographs of children. She had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of cruelty to a child. The jury was still deliberating on one additional charge of arranging a child sex offence against her.

Prosecutor Kerry Maylin described how Noon and Hathaway discussed child abuse online with other defendants and arranged meetings to carry out further sexual assaults. The children were forced into naked wrestling and playing Twister nude. Noon and the other convicted defendants were to be sentenced at a later date, with the case highlighting the dangers of online grooming and exploitation networks.
