Offence Summary

Full Description

In a case that has shocked the Bradford community, Mohammed Ilyas Alibhai, an Imam and teacher at a local mosque, has been jailed for sexually abusing a boy under his care. The abuse, which exploited Alibhai's position of authority within the religious institution, came to light leading to his trial and conviction.

Alibhai was found guilty in November 2022 of three counts of sexual activity with a child. The offences occurred while he held a trusted role at the mosque, where he abused his position to perpetrate the sexual assaults on the young victim. The case was heard at Bradford Crown Court, where the severity of the betrayal was emphasised by the presiding judge.

During sentencing last week, Judge Ahmed Nadim addressed Alibhai directly, stating: "You are a hypocrite with an unhealthy sexual interest. Your disgraceful conduct in a place of worship has betrayed the trust of the mosque congregation and the students alike". The judge highlighted the profound impact of the abuse, noting that it has caused "devastating" effects on the victim, including severe psychological damage.

  • Conviction: November 2022, three counts of sexual activity with a child
  • Sentence: One year imprisonment
  • Sexual Harm Prevention Order: Five years
  • Registration on Sex Offenders Register: Ten years

The prosecution detailed how Alibhai's actions undermined the sanctity of the mosque, a place meant for spiritual guidance and education. Court reports indicate that the victim has suffered long-term trauma as a result of the abuse, underscoring the lasting harm inflicted by such violations of trust. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within institutional settings and the need for vigilance to protect children.
