Full Description

Alan Cherry, a 67-year-old resident of St Helens, Merseyside, was convicted and jailed for committing online child sex offences. Cherry, who was already subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) as a registered sex offender, initiated inappropriate contact with a 13-year-old child over the internet. The court heard that he attempted sexual communication with the child and sought to incite them to engage in sexual activity, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law and child safety.

The offences came to light through investigative efforts by the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU). On 25 March 2024, officers attended Cherry's address in St Helens and arrested him. Cherry pleaded guilty to the charges of attempted sexual communication with a child, attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, and breaching his SHPO. His court appearance took place at Liverpool Crown Court on 7 May 2024, where the severity of his actions as a 'sexual predator' was highlighted.

During the sentencing, Judge [name not specified] imposed a custodial sentence of four years and two months' imprisonment on Cherry. In addition to the jail term, an indefinite SHPO was issued to restrict his future behaviour, and he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Detective Constable Becky Murrell from the NWROCU commented on the case, stating: 'Offenders like Cherry believe they can hide behind a computer or phone screen and evade justice, but this conviction proves otherwise. Cherry is a sexual predator now behind bars, and his actions have no place in our society.' She further emphasised the unit's commitment to protecting children, noting: 'We collaborate with law enforcement nationwide to protect children from danger, whether it occurs in person or online. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that sexual abuse knows no borders; it can happen anywhere, and its impact is devastating.'

The case underscores the ongoing efforts by UK law enforcement to combat online child exploitation. Cherry's arrest and subsequent conviction serve as a warning to similar offenders that digital anonymity does not shield them from prosecution. The proceedings were reported by the St Helens Star, based on details from Liverpool Crown Court and statements from the NWROCU.
