Offence Summary

Ciara Watkin, a transgender woman, was convicted of sexual assaults after failing to disclose her transgender status to a male sexual partner, preventing informed consent to the sexual acts performed over several days in June 2022.

Full Description

Ciara Watkin, a 21-year-old transgender woman from Stockton-on-Tees, has been convicted of multiple sexual offences at Teesside Crown Court on 22 August 2025. The charges stem from incidents in June 2022, where Watkin engaged in sexual acts with a 21-year-old man without disclosing her transgender status, thereby negating his ability to provide informed consent.

The pair first connected via Snapchat, exchanging messages for a couple of weeks before meeting in person at a house in Thornaby. After consuming alcohol and conversing, they proceeded to a bedroom in the property. During this encounter, Watkin informed the man that she was on her period, which prevented him from touching her below the waist while she performed sexual acts on him. A few days later, Watkin visited the man's home, where further sexual activity occurred.

Following these events, Watkin initially blocked all communication with the man but later re-established contact. It was during subsequent text messages that Watkin revealed her transgender identity and that she had male genitalia. The man stated in his police interview that he would not have consented to the sexual activity had he known of her transgender status, highlighting the significant impact these events had on his mental wellbeing.

Sarah Nelson, Senior Crown Prosecutor at CPS North East, commented: "It is clear from the evidence in this case that, prior to engaging in sexual activity with the victim, Watkin had made no attempt to inform him of her transgender status. The Crown Prosecution Service has shown that, by failing to disclose this to him, it would not have been possible for him to give informed consent to sexual activity." Nelson further noted the victim's distress and expressed hope that the conviction would provide some comfort.

Watkin was found guilty of two charges of sexual assault and one charge of assault by penetration. Sentencing is scheduled for 10 October 2025 at Teesside Crown Court. This case underscores the CPS's commitment to prosecuting sexual offences where consent is compromised, as outlined in their guidance on sexual violence and consent.
