Offence Summary

Graham Leslie Howard, a paedophile from Knottingley, was jailed for 30 years after being convicted of multiple child sex offences including rape, indecent assault, and inciting children to engage in sexual behaviour.

Full Description

Graham Leslie Howard, 47, from Croft Avenue in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison at York Crown Court for a series of horrific child sex offences. The case, described by police as one of the worst they have ever dealt with, involved the systematic sexual and physical abuse of children over a prolonged period.

Howard was found guilty of 18 charges, comprising 11 counts of the rape of a child, two counts of indecency with a child, three counts of indecent assault, and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual behaviour. He also pleaded guilty to three offences of cruelty to a child just before his trial began. The offences took place while Howard lived in various locations, including York, Scarborough, and Darlington.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Rosie Rogers of Scarborough CID described the case in stark terms: "This is one of the worst cases of child abuse I have ever dealt with. No child should have to go through the terror and pain that they suffered at his hands." She highlighted the bravery of the victims in coming forward, noting that their courage ensured Howard, a dangerous predator, is now behind bars and unable to harm more children. The police statement emphasised the unspeakable and sickening nature of the abuse inflicted on the young victims.

The NSPCC, a children's protection charity, issued a statement underscoring the severity of Howard's crimes: "The long-jail term handed to Howard reflects the truly sickening abuse he inflicted on his young victims, which will leave an indelible mark on their lives." The charity praised the victims' bravery in bringing the abuser to justice and stressed the importance of support for recovery from such trauma. This case, reported by the Wakefield Express on 29 August 2019, serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of child sexual exploitation.

Howard's conviction followed a thorough investigation by North Yorkshire Police, with the sentencing occurring on Friday prior to the article's publication. The full extent of the abuse, spanning multiple locations and involving physical cruelty alongside sexual offences, underscores the predatory behaviour that authorities worked to dismantle.
