Offence Summary

George Bellwood, a convicted paedophile from Darlington, was sentenced to an additional four years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 multiple times when he was aged between 16 and 18.

Full Description

George Bellwood, a 34-year-old man formerly from Darlington, County Durham, England, faced further justice in 2026 following a new report of historical child sexual abuse. Previously convicted in 2024 and imprisoned for 21 years for a series of grave sexual offences against a child, including eight counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and making and distributing indecent images of children, Bellwood's crimes extended beyond that initial case.

The original investigation by Durham Constabulary revealed that Bellwood had raped a child at least 25 times over a three-year period, with one particularly harrowing incident occurring while the victim slept. This pattern of predatory behaviour came to light again when another survivor, a young woman who had been abused as a girl under the age of 13, bravely came forward to report the offences. She detailed numerous instances of sexual assault by Bellwood during his late teenage years, when he was between 16 and 18 years old.

Appearing at Teesside Crown Court in February 2026, Bellwood was found guilty of five further counts of sexual assault. The court sentenced him to an additional four years in prison, to be served consecutively with his existing term, and imposed a restraining order prohibiting any contact with the survivor. In a powerful victim impact statement read aloud in court, the woman expressed the profound and lasting trauma inflicted upon her: 'Throughout the years of abuse as a child I was scared, I was made to believe it was my fault, and that no-one would believe me. I will never look at a man around children the same again – I always wonder what if, even if I know 100% that nothing is happening, it always sits in the mind.' She further described how the abuse disrupted her daily life, from sleeping and socialising to trusting others, leaving her in constant fear that Bellwood might target other children.

Addressing Bellwood directly, the survivor asserted her resilience: 'I know I will never mentally or physically recover from the damage you have caused, but from this day forward I will not be held back by you any longer. I have hopes and dreams that I am going to accomplish and make sure no child has to go through this again at the hands of him.' Detective Sergeant Melissa Lamb of Durham Constabulary, who led the investigation, commended the woman's courage, stating: 'Bellwood is clearly a very dangerous offender who poses a significant risk to young children. Thanks to her bravery, we have been able to secure another conviction and a further custodial sentence for Bellwood.' This case underscores the ongoing commitment of Durham Constabulary to pursuing justice for victims of child sexual abuse, as reported on their official website.
