In a case heard at York Crown Court, Krzysztof Bering, a 35-year-old resident of Selby, was sentenced for possessing and downloading a vast collection of indecent images of children. The court learned that Bering had amassed nearly 20,000 indecent videos and pictures of youngsters, including images of children as young as three and those in distress. These files were downloaded over an extended period from 2006 to 2023, as detailed in a police forensic report.
Prosecutor Rob Galley outlined how Bering initially encountered adult pornography online before progressing to indecent images of children. Bering admitted to police that although he did not feel good about it, he saved the images because they made him feel better. His electronic devices also contained software that allowed other users to view the images, raising further concerns about distribution potential. Upon raiding his home in 2023, police found the material, and Bering initially declined to answer questions but later admitted responsibility in a December 2024 interview, stating, 'I need help'.
Defence barrister Celine Kart explained that Bering's offending stemmed from the abuse he suffered as a child, including being shown pornography at a young age. She noted, 'It has been incredibly difficult (for him) to get to terms with the extent of the abuse.' Through counselling following his arrest, Bering recognised that the sexual gratification from the images was a maladaptive way to cope with stress, which had developed into an addiction rather than providing relief. Bering pleaded guilty to three charges of making by download indecent images of children, one of possessing extreme pornography, and one of having a prohibited image of a child.
The collection included 161 videos and 343 pictures in the worst category, 225 videos and 451 images in the middle category, and 1,254 videos and 17,306 images in the least serious category. Bering disputed the full timeframe with a probation officer but accepted responsibility overall. He expressed remorse and had begun therapy and a rehabilitation course for sex offenders with a specialist organisation.
Judge sentencing details from York Crown Court records indicate Bering received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, with conditions including 20 days of rehabilitative activities and 150 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, restricting his internet use and requiring compliance with police monitoring. The court considered his employment, accommodation, and family responsibilities, which would be impacted by immediate custody.
