Offence Summary

Summer Andrew arranged the commission of a child sex offence by facilitating the sexual abuse of a four-year-old child on Omegle through exchanging sexual footage for live abuse streams.

Full Description

A couple from Essex has been imprisoned for their involvement in facilitating the sexual abuse of a young child via the online chat platform Omegle. Summer Andrew, 23, of Old Road, Clacton, and her partner Nick Barrett, 23, of Claydon Road, Harwich, were sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on 17 July 2024 following an investigation by Essex Police's Police Online Investigation Team (POLIT).

The investigation began in December 2021 after intelligence revealed that Barrett and Andrew were engaging in sexual activity online while children were present. Further enquiries uncovered that the pair had filmed themselves having sex and exchanged this footage for live streams of a four-year-old child being abused. They utilised Omegle, a now-defunct video chat site that randomly connected users, to carry out these acts. Omegle ceased operations in November 2023 amid numerous child abuse investigations linked to the platform.

Andrew was charged with arranging the commission of a child sex offence. She pleaded not guilty but was found guilty following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court on 11 April 2024. She was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

Both individuals were issued with Sexual Harm Prevention Orders and indefinite Notification Requirement Orders, registering them as sex offenders. Judge Morgan emphasised the gravity of the offence, stating, 'This offence is so serious only a custodial sentence can be justified.' Detective Sergeant Nicola Hadfield, the investigating officer, commended the team's efforts, noting, 'The tireless work of our officers has managed to safeguard other children from coming to harm in the hands of Barrett and Andrew.' She added that the offenders' future interactions with children will be closely monitored due to their status as registered sex offenders.

The case highlights the dangers posed by anonymous online platforms and the importance of police vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from sexual exploitation. Essex Police's proactive investigation prevented further harm and led to the conviction of those responsible for these heinous acts.
