Offence Summary

Ian David Harmer, a dangerous paedophile, was jailed for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy at knifepoint in woodland next to the Basingstoke Canal in 1982.

Full Description

A 'dangerous predator' has been imprisoned for a historical sexual assault committed over 35 years ago. Ian David Harmer, now 63, targeted a vulnerable teenage boy in a chilling attack near the Basingstoke Canal.

The incident occurred on April 26, 1982, when the then 13-year-old victim was walking along the towpath at around mid-morning. Harmer, who was an adult at the time, approached the boy and asked if he had seen his dog. He then claimed to have a knife, and the boy felt pressure in his lower back, convincing him of the threat. Harmer directed the terrified teenager into nearby woodland, where he carried out the sexual assault. After the abuse, Harmer instructed the boy to count to a certain number before getting up, adding to the trauma of the ordeal.

Harmer, of Aspen Lane, Northolt, Ealing, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on February 19, 2020. He pleaded guilty to the charges, receiving a sentence of 13 years’ imprisonment, reduced to 11 years due to his plea. The court described him as a 'dangerous paedophile', highlighting the severity of his actions. This case was brought forward through the combined efforts of Surrey Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, demonstrating that justice can be served even decades later.
